Montreux release date

Just got word that March 26, 2002 is the release date for the Live At Montreux CD. It will have 3 bonus tracks: Lyra, Eros and Arcturas. Niner-Two will remain in the trimmed down version. The extra material adds about 25 minutes to the running time.

from Russell Scarbrough on September 18:

I received news this morning that Hank Levy passed away yesterday afternoon. Hank was loved by many and an inspiration as a teacher, as a musician, and as a man. Truly God blessed the world with Hank's music, and his character as a gentle and warm individual.

During this particularly tragic time, let us remember the music he shared, the wisdom he taught, and the joy of simply knowing and loving this great man. Please pass this message on to those who have known or known Hank over the years. v May God bless and protect us all,
Russell Scarbrough

Hank was a very important contributor to the Don Ellis library, being the first composer from outside of the band to "get" what Don was trying to do with his new sound. Hank wrote many important pieces for the band over the years including "Chain Reaction," and "Whiplash." Hank also composed for the Stan Kenton Orchestra and many other groups. He also had a long career teaching Jazz at Towson State University in Maryland between 1968 and 1992.

There is an excellent video documentary on the music of Hank Levy called "A Head of Time Ahead of Time." The video features commentary by several former members of the Don Ellis Orchestra. There is also a companion CD available.
